Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona, La Liga: Final Score 1-0, Barça reclaim top spot in the table with hard-fought home win
Barcelona are back in first place in the La Liga table for the first time in two months thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium on Monday night. Barça were not even close to their best and were made to suffer by an intense and well-coached Rayo side, but a first half Robert Lewandowski penalty was enough to separate the two sides and give Barça all three points to put them back on top of the standings with 14 games to go.
FIRST HALF:
Barça made a strong start to the game, taking advantage of Rayo’s high pressing to find spaces in behind and create some big opportunities. Raphinha had two monster chances early on and missed both, and Lamine Yamal also wasted a golden opportunity as Barça dominated the first 25 minutes but couldn’t find the net.
Then came a crucial VAR intervention as Iñigo Martínez was clearly brought down in the box by Pathé Ciss, and the referee initially waved off the protests but eventually gave Barça the penalty after watching the replay. Robert Lewandowski scored from the spot, and the home team finally had the advantage.
It seemed as though Barça were ready to take off and establish their dominance even further, but Rayo had a very strong response and started to bring real threat on the counter, especially with their wing play. Wojciech Szczesny had to make a couple of important saves, and both Pau Cubarsí and Martínez made big interventions in and around the box.
Rayo continued to pile on the pressure and thought they had equalized through Jorge De Frutos just before the break, but the goal was ruled out after the referee judged striker Randy Nteka to have interfered in the play from an offside position as he blocked Iñigo from trying to make a play on the ball as De Frutos was ready to strike on goal.
The halftime whistle came to rescue Barça at their worst moment in the game, and the Blaugrana needed to regain some poise and composure and be ready for a Rayo side that would surely continue to bring the heat in the second half.
SECOND HALF:
The intensity was amped up even higher in the final period, as Rayo continued to chase an equalizer with relentless high pressing while Barça tried to turn their superior possession into chances.
Each side had a huge opportunity in the first 30 minutes of the period, with De Frutos almost scoring again for Rayo while Raphinha wasted yet another monster one-on-one chance for Barça. Dani Olmo came off the bench and made a positive impact for the hosts, but the game was still up for grabs as we reached the final 15 minutes and Barça couldn’t put it away.
The Catalans completely fell apart as a team in the dying minutes, constantly losing the ball and allowing Rayo to counter-attack time after time. And in the 90th minute the visitors had another monster chance to equalize when Adrián Embarba’s cross found De Frutos all alone in the box, but the winger somehow missed his header and wasted Rayo’s best chance of the night.
The away side continued to fight until the very end for one last opportunity, but Barça managed to run out the clock and the final whistle came to give them all three points. This was a night where all that mattered was a win to go back on top, but Barça did not deserve the victory at all. It was their worst performance in a long time, and they cannot expect to win the league if they keep playing this way.
For now though, we can (kind of) celebrate being back in first place.
